About this project

The proposed programme (Circle Gas LPG Smart Meter Programme) has been developed by Circle Gas to reduce reliance on wood, charcoal, and kerosene commonly used for cooking in households and commercial facilities like restaurants within target areas. This will be achieved through distribution and installation of LPG units connected to a smart meter to track and monitor LPG usage by end-users. The programme adopts a Pay as You Go (PAYG) approach to accelerate access to LPG. The PoA also aims to contribute towards sustainable development goals. The specific description of the PoA is as follows: a) The PoA entails distribution and installation of PAYG LPG units made distinct by the unique smart meter developed by Circle Gas. b) The project developer will have formal responsibility for the PoA and will be directly responsible for maintaining sales records, collecting baseline information, and annual monitoring. c) The PoA is a voluntary action by the project developer. d) The goal is to increase access to LPG, especially among low-income households, significantly reducing GHG emissions and other negative effects associated with the use of traditional fuels. The PoA aims to replace biomass and kerosene cookstoves with LPG units, delivering impacts across multiple areas: • Health: LPG replaces dirty fuels, improving indoor air quality and reducing respiratory illnesses, especially for women and children (SDG 3). • Climate: Biomass and kerosene stoves emit GHGs. LPG cuts CO₂ and black carbon, helping mitigate climate change (SDG 13). • Gender: Biomass stoves require frequent fuel collection, mostly by women and girls. LPG saves time, enabling income-generating activities and supporting education (SDG 4 & 5). • Savings: Fuel scarcity drives up prices, straining budgets. Circle Gas targets low-income urban communities, offering savings and creating jobs (SDG 1). • Energy Access: Affordable cooking energy will be achieved through this programme (SDG 7). • Jobs: The project will create employment, especially for youth in field sales, service, and management (SDG 8).
