About this project
The purpose of the Programme of Activities (PoA) “Improved Cookstoves” is to provide access to improved cookstove/electric cookstoves significantly reducing wood fuel consumption of low-income households by providing them with affordable improved cookstoves in replacement of their low-efficiency three-stone fires and traditional stoves. The geographical boundaries within the PoA includes Benin, Bangladesh, Cote De Ivoire, Ghana, India, Nepal Senegal and Togo. More than 2.6 billion people in world lack access to clean cooking facilities, relying instead on solid wood, charcoal, kerosene or coal as their primary cooking fuel. According to statistics, household air pollution, mostly from cooking smoke, is linked to around 2.5 million premature deaths annually worldwide. 900 million in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), cook with inefficient charcoal and firewood stoves, and non-renewable biomass for cooking constitutes around 60% of SSA's primary energy demand. Also, In Southeast Asia over 1 billion people depend on solid fuels to cover their energy needs, mainly for cooking and heating Firewood extraction is among the most pertinent threats. Apart from contributing to localised forest degradation, it has a colossal effect on life and wellbeing of the communities. The traditional kitchens, with firewood cookstoves are small and in confined space with minimal ventilation. The smoke generated in these kitchens have been known to severely affect respiratory health, especially of the women who primarily manage the kitchen. The project involves wide dissemination of clean cookstoves and improved cookstove depending upon the existing baseline and demographic location within the countries mentioned in the PoA. The project contributes to universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services for households, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and social institutions through access to improved cooking. It also helps in building resilient livelihoods by increasing efficiency in energy consumption.
