About this project

The Ghana Cocoa Agroforestry Livelihoods Project is designed to enhance the productivity and long-term sustainability of cocoa farming systems while improving the livelihoods of the communities that depend on them. By introducing an agroforestry model that integrates shade tree species into existing cocoa plantations, the project aims to extend the productive lifespan of cocoa trees and strengthen the system’s resilience to environmental challenges, including pests and diseases. This initiative will be carried out in close partnership with the local communities, with a focus on engaging youth teams to lead on the ground implementation. The project is expected to reach 11,000 farmers for an implementation area of 17,000 hectares. The project’s main activity consists of planting shade and fruit trees within the existing cocoa plantations. Nine different native tree species will be incorporated into the farms to achieve a target density of 90 shade trees per hectare. Additionally, the new tree plantations will be associated with the training and coaching of the farmers in sustainable agroforestry practices such as tree management, pruning and Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The implementation of these practices is expected to increase the productive lifetime of the cocoa species and reduce the incidence of pests and diseases on the targeted trees. The project is expected to sequester 2.61 MtCO2e within 30 years.
