About this project

The MuLaKiLa project is a long-term (32 years) community-based landscape restoration and climate resilience initiative in Rwanda’s western province, spanning Ngororero and Rutsiro districts. As part of the voluntary carbon market, it is projected to sequester 5.4 million tons of CO₂e, with 4.356 million tons of CO₂e accounted for after buffer deduction. The project will restore 21,000 hectares of degraded smallholder land through agroforestry systems, woodlots, and Sustainable Agriculture Land Management (SALM) practices. It will benefit around 160,000 farmers by creating green jobs, improving livelihoods, and addressing climate challenges such as soil erosion, land degradation, and biodiversity loss. Core interventions include planting over 6 million trees, community mobilization, capacity building, and the establishment of innovative nature-based financial mechanisms.
