Circle Gas LPG Smart Meter Program in Kenya
Gold Standard · GS11331 · Kenya
About this project
The proposed project activity (Circle Gas LPG Smart Meter Programme in Kenya) has been developed by Circle Gas to reduce reliance on wood, charcoal, and kerosene used for cooking by households in target areas. This will be achieved through distribution and installation of LPG units fitted with smart meters to track usage. The project adopts a Pay as You Go (PAYG) approach to accelerate access to LPG and contribute to sustainable development goals. a) The project entails distribution and installation of PAYG LPG units made distinct by the smart meter developed by Circle Gas. b) The project developer is Circle Gas, with formal responsibility for the activity. c) The VPA implementor is M-Gas Kenya, responsible for maintaining the sales database, collecting baseline data, and coordinating annual monitoring. d) The project is a voluntary action by the developer. e) The goal is to accelerate LPG access among low-income households, reducing GHG emissions and negative effects of traditional fuels. The project replaces biomass and kerosene cookstoves with LPG units, delivering impacts across multiple areas: • Health: LPG reduces dirty fuel use, improving indoor air quality and lowering respiratory illness risks, especially for women and children. HAP causes ~21,560 deaths annually in Kenya (SDG 3). • Climate: LPG emits low black carbon and PM2.5, meeting WHO guidelines and reducing climate impacts (SDG 13). • Gender: LPG eliminates fuel collection, saving time for women and girls, enabling education and income activities (SDG 4 & 5). • Savings: LPG reduces fuel costs for low-income urban families and creates jobs (SDG 1). • Energy Access: Affordable cooking energy is provided (SDG 7). • Jobs: Employment is created, especially for youth in sales, service, and management (SDG 8). The project boundary is Kenya. Carbon rights are transferred to Circle Gas via waiver signed at installation.
