About this project

The Red Sea Wind Energy Project (the project) is a new 654 MW wind farm in the Gulf of Suez in Egypt. It is located in an area of 78.5 km² in the Ras Ghareb Local Governmental Unit of the Red Sea Governorate. The project reached financial close on 31 March 2023 and will begin operating in phases: Phase 1 in December 2024 and Phase 2 in August 2025. The project is a voluntary initiative developed by the Red Sea Wind Energy S.A.E consortium (the project developer) based on the “Build, Own, Operate” scheme with the Egyptian government, contributing to Egypt's national targets for renewable energy. The purpose of the project is to decrease GHG emissions by increasing the share of new renewable energy and in the Egyptian Grid. It contributes to the following sustainable development goals (SDGs): SDG13, by decreasing on average 1,116,582 tCO2e/year; SDG7: by delivering on average 2,688,617 MWh/year to the Egyptian Unified Grid; and SDG8, by creating around 40 job opportunities during the operation phase for a duration of 25 years.
