About this project

The POA aims to provide an environmentally friendly solution for treating organic waste including animal manure and organic waste which, to generate thermal energy for community use across West Africa and South Asia. Implemented in nine countries - India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Benin, Ghana, Togo, Senegal, and Côte d’Ivoire. The PoA promotes sustainable waste management, renewable energy generation and improved health and sanitation while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The program introduces biodigester technology which processes organic waste under anaerobic conditions to produce biogas and nutrient-rich fertilizer through a natural microbial process. Biogas, composed of approximately 55–65% methane and 35–44% carbon dioxide serves as a clean and renewable cooking fuel. This initiative provides a sustainable energy alternative for rural and emerging communities, reducing dependence on non-renewable biomass and fossil fuels such as wood, coal, kerosene, and LPG major contributors to deforestation and carbon emissions. In 2023, wood harvesting alone accounted for an estimated 3.5 - 4.2 billion tons of CO₂ equivalent annually or over 10% of global emissions, highlighting the urgent need for such interventions. The PoA’s biodigester systems not only curb methane emissions by capturing gas from decomposing organic waste but also generate organic fertilizer from the residual digestate, enhancing soil fertility and agricultural productivity.
