GS12693 VPA-3 Access to Clean Water in Ghana
Gold Standard · GS13026 · Ghana
About this project
In Ghana, according to WHO, 7,653 deaths were caused by WASH related illness in 2019, 21 people per day, almost one person every hour dying from preventable WASH-related diseases. Ghana is striding towards providing 60% of urban families with access to securely managed water services; but, access to these services is substantially lower in rural areas, at just 17%. Indicators of cleanliness also demonstrate this disparity, with 32% of the compared to 9% of people in metropolitan environments, the rural population still urinates outside. About 25% of all under-5 mortalities are due to diarrhoea. One person out of every ten spend more than 30 minutes to access an improved source of drinking water a burden that is largely tasked on women and children. Another 11 per cent of the population, still drink from surface and other unsafe water sources. the statistics from UNICEF 2023 for The Republic of Ghana reveals 76% of households in Ghana are at risk of drinking water that is contaminated with faecal matter. Moreover, only 4% of households treat water suitably before drinking and 93% of households do not treat water at all which make them vulnerable towards water borne diseases. The current water supply systems are overburdened, and it is further predicted that annual capital expenditures for urban and rural water supply amount to almost US $ 240 million. The Ghana WASH Sector Development Program (GWASHSDP) estimates that $1.7 billion is needed annually for program investment if Ghana should reach the SDG 6. This includes investment requirements for urban water supply estimated at $420 million and rural/community water supply at $350 million annually. The project involves water treatment technology for households, that otherwise boil unsafe drinking water using non-renewable sources and/or depend on the consumption of unsafe water (issue of supressed demand) due to various barrier factors or use energy exhaustive methods to purify water thereby contributing to the emissions by Ghana.
