About this project

Access to clean drinking water is still a challenging issue which needs immediate resolution for existence. More than 50% of Beninese living in semi-urban environment do not have access to drinking water. Children suffer from waterborne diseases like diarrhoea and cholera. Girls drop out of school to trek kilometres every day to fetch water. Around 97% of rural households rely on firewood for cooking which also suggests that firewood is the only source used for purifying water for drinking purpose. People are often exposed to suppressed demand in absence of purification technology and efforts involved in it. The World Bank has provided International Development Association (IDA) additional financing of $250 million apart from earlier finances to enable Benin to continue its largescale program to provide water access to rural communities. This operation is also in line with the 2021-2026 Government Action Plan and with the World Bank Group’s 2018-2023 Country Partnership Framework for Benin evidencing government focus on provision of clean drinking water to its people. The project involves water treatment technology for households, that otherwise boil unsafe drinking water using non-renewable sources and/or depend on the consumption of unsafe water (issue of supressed demand) due to various barrier factors or use energy exhaustive methods to purify water thereby contributing to the emissions by Benin.
