GS12771 VPA-3 Sustainable Energy Generation through Biodigester systems in Benin
Gold Standard · GS13046 · Benin
About this project
The proposed VPA involves the installation of 650 biodigester plants with a total capacity of 5,000 m³ across Benin to convert organic waste into biogas, a renewable energy source that replaces fuelwood and fossil fuels commonly used for cooking. The project utilizes locally available biomass resources such as cassava peel waste and animal waste to produce sustainable biogas, offering an integrated solution for clean energy generation and waste management. Cassava, a staple crop in Benin, produces large amounts of peel waste that are typically discarded or underutilized; through anaerobic digestion, this waste is converted into methane-rich biogas, reducing methane emissions that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere. The project enhances energy independence, promotes eco friendly waste utilization, and contributes to improved health, sanitation, and agricultural productivity. The biodigester system consists of a fermentation chamber where cassava and animal waste decompose in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas for cooking and a nutrient-rich slurry used as organic fertilizer. The project boundary covers the entire biogas value chain from waste collection and digestion to gas use and fertilizer application. Feedstocks include two main categories: animal waste and organic waste such as food waste(cassava peels), or garden residues, etc.
