GS13047 VPA-1 Improved Cook Stoves in Benin
Gold Standard · GS13048 · Benin
About this project
The VPA aims to provide energy efficient Improved cookstoves (ICS) to the rural communities in Benin relying on traditional firewood cookstove or 3-stone cookstove to cater clean cooking needs, at the same time reduce the greenhouse gas emission resulting from inefficient cooking technology. The United Nations' recognition of a “clean, healthy, and sustainable environment” as a fundamental right affirms that access to clean cooking is an essential entitlement for every individual. The VPA activity involves the distribution of fuel-efficient improved cookstoves (ICS) to replace the baseline traditional cookstoves in rural households. Benin faces a significant challenge in improving cooking efficiency. Most of the population (94%) still uses polluting fuels like firewood and charcoal, cooking on traditional three stones coosktoves with low energy efficiency. Firewood and charcoal are the primary sources of household energy (80.3% for wood, 13.4% for charcoal) used by rural communities in Benin, often on thermally inefficient stoves. High population densities and growth rates exacerbate resource pressure. This project aims to reduce deforestation and land degradation by improving energy efficiency in households through the distribution of Improved cookstoves. By reducing the need for wood or charcoal by 50%, these cookstoves decrease harmful greenhouse gas emissions, reduce forest pressure and enhance safety and health. They generate less smoke, limiting indoor air pollution and respiratory diseases. Improved cookstoves also increase the standard of living by reducing fuel costs and giving women more time for income-generating activities.
