About this project

World Vision Australia (WVA), World Vision Zambia (WVZ) and FORLIANCE intend to implement this Program of Activities with the objective to restore forest landscapes in several regions in Zambia making use of Assisted Natural Regeneration and other forest restoration and management methods. The POA seeks to create and enhance carbon sinks, reduce pressure on woody biomass, restore the local ecology and biodiversity and apply measures of climate smart agriculture whilst delivering significant socio-economic benefits to the local communities. The intent is to develop community-led revegetation projects using primarily Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) on degraded community land to ensure longterm social benefits and carbon removal. FMNR is a low cost, sustainable land restoration technique used to combat poverty and hunger among poor subsistence farmers by increasing food and timber production, and resilience to climate extremes. FMNR promotes the regrowth of indigenous trees, shrubs and naturally occurring seeds in degraded forest and farmland through farmers and community members undertaking selective pruning and protection to encourage the growth of new shoots. Since 2017 the FMNR technique has been promoted by WV'Z to be used by farmers in Miombo forest ecosystems of Zambia. The development of a carbon program is expected to accelerate the adoption of the technique and provide additional incentives for long term sustainability and permanence.
