About this project

The project involves distribution of fuel-efficient improved cookstoves (ICS) in Republic of Kenya. The ICS disseminated through this project will replace the baseline practice of burning wood in rudimentary cookstoves or in three-stone fires. Under this project, two Total Land Care (TLC) Rocket Stoves will be installed in eligible households throughout rural Kenya. The TLC Stove burns wood more efficiently than baseline stoves resulting in wood fuel savings for the user. The introduction of TLC Stoves saves both fuel costs and time spent on firewood collection. Time saved can be utilized for other productive activities such as exploring educational opportunities, attending school (for children), socializing, resting, or even home-based enterprises that generate additional income for households – all of which can lead to economic empowerment. The reduction of household air pollution, resulting from using the ICS, helps reduce the burden of disease (including respiratory, cardiovascular, and cognitive diseases) associated with exposure to household air pollution. Reduced morbidity results in fewer workdays lost for the country, reduced healthcare costs, and improved overall quality of life. As the ICS consume less firewood, it will help prevent excessive firewood consumption and reduce forest degradation. This reduction in demand for wood fuel allows forests to regenerate, protecting wildlife habitats and biodiversity.
