About this project

The RANOVOLA project, building on infrastructure put in place by other HELVETAS initiatives, aims to ensure safe and sustainable access to clean water for the most vulnerable rural communities in Madagascar. The RANOVOLA project main objectives are to provide reliable access to clean water, improve public health by reducing the prevalence of waterborne diseases, strengthen the autonomy of local communities by collaborating with private operators to manage the operation and maintenance of the established infrastructure, support the ecological transition by limiting dependence on fossil fuels and firewood for water purification, and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by acting on health, environmental, economic, and social fronts. The RANOVOLA project infrastructure will rely on two main technologies: 1) gravitational systems, using water sources located at higher altitudes to transport water to communities without the need for additional energy; and 2) solar pumping systems, utilizing boreholes to ensure a constant and economical water supply. In both cases, water treatment is carried out by filtration, chlorination, and iron removal. The operation and management of the infrastructure will be ensured by private operators, under a decentralized management model in compliance with Malagasy legal frameworks.
