About this project

The Restore Africa: Restoring Landscapes and Livelihoods in Western Uganda project is implemented in degraded agricultural landscapes in the Western (Afromontane) highlands and pastoral rangelands of mid-Western Uganda. Over several decades, these regions have experienced substantial deforestation and degradation, poor agriculture practices, overgrazing, and an unsustainable demand for fuelwood. Climate change, population increases, poverty and lack of economic opportunities further exacerbate pressure on the land. The project focuses on establishment of new trees (e.g. through manual planting and broadcast seeding) as well as the improved management activities that enhance the natural regeneration of established root stock (e.g. through coppice management) in 24 districts in Western Uganda involving more than 200,000 small farmer households. The aim is to both sequester carbon as well as generate a broad set of environmental and socio-economic co-benefits through the implementation of sustainable agroforestry practices at a landscape scale. Co-benefits, based on the restoration of ecosystem functions, include sustainable food production, enhanced local livelihoods, increased gender equality and the improvement of ecosystem services. The project will collaborate and align with the many organizations already established in the area to enhance long-term sustainability and ensure that implementation occurs in an efficient, locally appropriate, and acceptable manner.
