About this project

The Restore Africa: Restoring Landscapes and Livelihoods in Malawi project is implemented in degraded agricultural landscapes in the in the Northern, Central and Southern Regions of the country. Over 90% of households in the country depend on natural resources and subsistence agriculture to meet their livelihoods, food and energy needs. Extensive clearing of forest and woodlands for fuelwood, followed by conversion to cropland, is driving a high annual deforestation rate of 1%. The project focuses on establishment of new trees (e.g. through manual planting and broadcast seeding) as well as the improved management activities that enhance the natural regeneration of established root stock (e.g. through coppice management) in seven districts in Malawi involving more than 150,000 small farmer households. The aim is to both sequester carbon as well as generate a broad set of environmental and socio-economic co-benefits through the implementation of sustainable agroforestry practices at a landscape scale. Co-benefits, based on the restoration of ecosystem functions, include sustainable food production, enhanced local livelihoods, increased gender equality and the improvement of ecosystem services. The project will collaborate and align with the many organizations already established in the area to enhance long-term sustainability and ensure that implementation occurs in an efficient, locally appropriate, and acceptable manner.
