About this project

The Restore Africa: Restoring Landscapes and Livelihoods in Coastal Kenya project is implemented in Kenya’s coastal region, specifically in the Kwale and Kilifi counties. With an annual deforestation rate of 0.58%, Kenya faces significant forest loss, primarily driven by dependence on natural resources and extensive land degradation. The primary causes of land degradation include unsustainable wood resource exploitation, the expansion of unsustainable cultivation practices, the spread of invasive species, pollution, and climate change. The project focuses on establishment of new trees (e.g. through manual planting and broadcast seeding) as well as the improved management activities that enhance the natural regeneration of established root stock (e.g. through coppice management) in the Kwale and Kilifi counties in Kenya, involving more than 100,000 small farmer households. The aim is to both sequester carbon as well as generate a broad set of environmental and socio-economic co-benefits through the implementation of sustainable agroforestry practices at a landscape scale. Co-benefits, based on the restoration of ecosystem functions, include increased household income, enhanced local livelihoods, increased gender equality and the improvement of ecosystem services. The project builds on extensive experience in socio-economic development within the region.
