About this project

The Restore Africa: Restoring Landscapes and Livelihoods in Western Kenya and Rift Valley Kenya project is implemented in Kenya’s Elgeyo-Marakwet, Migori and Narok counties. Over several decades, these counties have experienced substantial deforestation and degradation because of poor agricultural practices, overgrazing and unsustainable demand for fuelwood. The scenario - the continued degradation of land and erosion of livelihood opportunities – will most likely continue to occur unless there is a substantial and additional intervention The project focuses on establishment of new trees (e.g. through manual planting and broadcast seeding) as well as the improved management activities that enhance the natural regeneration of established root stock (e.g. through coppice management) in the Elgeyo-Marakwet, Migori and Narok counties in Kenya, involving more than 75,000 small farmer households. The aim is to both sequester carbon as well as generate a broad set of environmental and socio-economic co-benefits through the implementation of sustainable agroforestry practices at a landscape scale. Co-benefits, based on the restoration of ecosystem functions, include increased household income, enhanced local livelihoods, increased gender equality and the improvement of ecosystem services.
