About this project

The Empowering Communities Through Improved Cookstoves project in rural Togo distributes fuel-efficient improved cookstoves (ICS) to replace traditional, inefficient three-stone fires commonly used in rural households. The cookstoves are manufactured locally in Togo, supporting infrastructure development, generating employment, and stimulating economic growth in the region. By reducing the amount of firewood required for cooking, the project alleviates the time and physical burden of firewood collection—a task that disproportionately falls on women and girls. This, in turn, enables greater access to education and income-generating opportunities. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the project delivers a range of co-benefits, including: Improved indoor air quality, reducing the incidence of respiratory and eye-related illnesses caused by smoke inhalation from traditional stoves. Reduced pressure on local forests through decreased firewood demand, slowing deforestation and preserving biodiversity. Lower household expenditure on cooking fuel due to more efficient wood use. Increased time savings for women and children, enabling greater focus on education, caregiving, and economic activities. Job creation and skill development through local cookstove production and distribution. By addressing both climate change and local development needs, the project contributes to eight Sustainable Development Goals.
