About this project

The project aims to restore and maintain non-functional boreholes in rural, water-scarce regions of South Africa. By providing reliable access to clean groundwater, it reduces dependence on unsafe water sources and the need to boil water using traditional fuels. The initiative also builds local capacity by training and employing community technicians for ongoing maintenance, ensuring long-term sustainability and resilience. The project improves access to safe drinking water, leading to a reduction in waterborne diseases and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the use of traditional fuels for water purification. It lessens the burden on women and children by minimizing the time spent collecting water, enhances community health and safety, creates local employment opportunities, and promotes awareness of safe water and hygiene practices.
