About this project
BIWACALI stands for Burka Initiative for Water Balancing, Carbon Sequestration and Livelihood Improvement. The Oromo word “Burquaa” means “burbling spring”, symbolizing the main objective of this project: ensuring the water security of the West-Ethiopian Upper Dabana - and the East-Ethiopian Hakim Gara watersheds by restoring about 10,000 ha areas degraded area into forest over the next decades. This will be achieved by tree planting and applying the Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) technique, which is designed to significantly improve the income and livelihoods of local farming communities. Next to the physical restoration work, major project activities are the formation of cooperatives and unions for forest management and training on FMNR, sustainable farming methods and alternative livelihoods. The newly created cooperatives will be strongly supported by World Vision Ethiopia in the first years of the project. It is envisioned that afterwards, they will take on the main responsibility for managing the forest areas, their products and the monitoring of the project impacts. The project is being implemented jointly by the local communities, Heineken Ethiopia, World Vision Ethiopia and FORLIANCE.
