About this project

In Dar es Salaam, hundreds of tons of organic waste are generated every day at the local food markets. The majority of organic waste is either disposed under uncontrolled conditions at dumpsites or left uncollected and untreated, contributing to waste accumulations in the streets and odour pollution in the city. This is avoided by collecting and treating the organic waste in a controlled composting facility. The composting process under controlled and aerobic conditions will maintain the biological process and therefore avoid methane emissions. The composting facility will be built on a 2 hectare area. The area is mostly paved and the whole area where the organic waste is kept for the first rotting process (controlled intensive rotting) is safely drained. This first process step takes about two weeks, after which the now fresh compost material is relocated to a maturation area. The rotting process takes around 8-10 weeks in total, during which the waste is actively aerated to maintain the biological process.
