DATA GUIDE
Asking the analyst well
Name a country, a year or a number, and ask in plain English; use the examples when unsure.
What it understands
- Countries by name (including "Ivory Coast", "DRC", "The Gambia") and sub-regions ("West Africa").
- Years (1996–2025) and numbers (10%, 5 km, 500 ha, 1 million tonnes).
- Topics: area, change, rankings, comparisons, carbon, scenarios, patches and hot spots, data quality, sources, licences, concepts and how-to help.
Good questions
- "How much mangrove does Mozambique have?"
- "Which countries lost the most since 1996?"
- "Compare Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique."
- "How much CO₂ was released by net loss in Nigeria?"
- "What is effective mesh size?"
If it says it is unsure, rephrase with a country or year, or open the Ask page: it lists 100+ examples grouped by topic, with a search box and a Surprise me button.
Follow-ups. Under each answer, Try next chips run related questions in one click.
It will say "not available" when Atlas lacks the data rather than guess.
